Adult Electric Toothbrushes
Our dentists have been trying different toothbrushes over the past few weeks and here I will review them and along with my professional experience and patient feedback I will offer my recommendations! I hope the review is clear and please leave comments if you wish….happy reading
I have encountered every different type of toothbrush in my experience including meeting one patient who cleaned their teeth with a wooden stick only and many who have never used a toothbrush; but here I will review the best electric toothbrushes available Vs Manual toothbrushes. Oral B and Philips produce, in my opinion, the very best electric toothbrushes for both an adult and childrens electric toothbrush. I have tried others including the colgate range but none have been as effective in all aspects as the Oral B and Philips. I would say there is not a lot to choose between them in terms of effectiveness of plaque removal, they both produce excellent brushes which are much more effective than manual toothbrushes. |
Advantages of all these electric toothbrushes over manual brushes
1. Remove more plaque than manual toothbrushes 2. Have a timer so you spend a full two minutes brushing everytime 3. Teeth feel much cleaner in my opinion and the opinion of every person and patient I talk to who has changed to an electric toothbrush 4. No need to scrub, just hold toothbrush on each individual tooth and each surface of that tooth, so technique is less important 5. Some stop oscillating if you are pushing too hard and as you don’t need to scrub they are more gentle on your gums and teeth (even if it feels less gentle) |
The only advantage I have found of a manual brush is that it is easier to scrub your tongue if you are that way inclined but you will soon forget this as your teeth and mouth will feel so much cleaner with an electric toothbrush! They sometimes take a bit of getting used to but persevere as this is the best thing you can do for your own teeth and remember you can always ask your dentist or ours at ask a dentist if you want advice on tooth brushing techniques.
The following adult brushes are my recommended ones in the Oral B and Philips ranges, I have deliberately put the top of the range and my favourite one from the range for around the £30-£50 mark if you don’t want to invest in the more expensive ones. Generally your teeth will feel equally as clean with all of them but the top of the range will have more functions or accessories as described below. For a manual toothbrush I would recommend the COLGATE 360 range but I personally don't find a lot of difference between any of the branded toothbrushes besides head size and ease to hold for people with arthritis or other problems with holding small diameter items.

Philips Sonicare easyclean (target price £39.99) 1 mode, 1 speed, 12 hours for full charge gives 56 mins usage. These have sonic motion with the bristles moving side to side rapidly as opposed to a pulsating oscillating (twisting) motion like you get in the Oral B range - I personally favour the Oral B but both leave your teeth feeling equally clean and are equally effective at plaque removal.
Phillips Sonicare diamond clean (target price 124.99), Excellent brush for patients who want to pay a little more for chic/design and accessories. It comes with a stylish glass beaker which acts as a charger, a USB charger and a sleek illuminated display, it is available in white BLACK, PINK and now PURPLE (they call it amethyst)!, 84 mins usage on full 12 hr charge, 5 cleaning modes, 2 brush heads: standard and mini brush head. Replacement head included. Travel case included for when you're on-the-go. We love it too. And for style we recommend the amethyst diamond clean over all the rest!
